The general aim of the programme is to obtain internationally comparable doctor’s degree of science. The particular aim of doctoral studies in the branch of linguistics, sub-branch of comparative and contrastive linguistics is to train highly qualified scientists and academic staff in linguistics. This aim can be achieved by fulfilling such tasks:

  • providing the opportunity for the doctoral students to successfully acquire the study programme and obtain respective competences;
  • ensuring the acquisition of the methodology of the analysis of contemporary language phenomena, which will allow to conduct the research on concrete problems of comparative and contrastive linguistics;
  • improving and deepening theoretical studies to the extent which will enable students to analyse concrete scientific problems within a broad context of linguistic paradigms;
  • training the doctoral students for independent and creative scientific activities by encouraging  them to participate in scientific conferences held in Latvia and abroad, to prepare publications for the most significant linguistic journals and collected articles and, thus, to demonstrate the outcomes of their research;
  • creating optimal conditions for the doctoral students to fulfil the set tasks: opprtunities to work in libraries and archives of foreign countries, opportunities to participate in projects, exchange programmes etc.;
  • involving doctoral students in the implementation of scientific projects;
  • developing attitudes necessary for conducting their research – accuracy, responsibility, correctness.

As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the young scientist will acquire and be able to demonstrate:


  • is able to demonstrate his knowledge in and understanding of topical contemporary paradigms and theoretical positions  in linguistics;
  • has acquired the methodology of writing a scientific paper and the research methods in linguistics;
  • understands theoretical positions of comparative and contrastive linguistics:
    • text analysis principles;
    • theories of meaning analysis;
    • ethnolinguistic attitudes within the aspect of various languages and national history;
    • is able to carry out research at the international level and context.


  • is able to critically evaluate and select methods adequate to scientific research;
  • is able to do extensive original research at an international level;
  • is able to participate in a scientific communication on issues of his research area with the society in general;
  • is able to independently improve his scientific qualification;
  • is able to implement scientific projects, lead research or developmen of projects to substantiate the research theme and methodology;


  • is able to conduct research by performing critical analysis, synthesis and assessment at an international level and context;
  • is able to assess the conformity of the methodologies with the selected scientific research or project;
  • is able to independently produce the research idea, to plan, structure and lead scientific projects.

Doctoral students have possibilities:

  • to study under the guidance of professional and experienced university lecturers;
  • to publish their articles and research results in annual DU collections of research articles and periodical publications;
  • to participate in annual scientific conferences in Daugavpils University and other higher educational establishments, as well as in international conferences;
  • to participate in international student exchange programmes and study at higher educational establishments abroad;
  • to participate in the implementation of projects related to the theme of research;
  • to receive scholarship if the student studies for the state budget means.
