The aim of the study programme is to train efficient and competitive music teachers of instrument playing or solo singing or choir subjects, who would possess new and up-to-date knowledge and views in the issues of music and music pedagogy, who would promote the development of cultural environment in Latvia and Latgale region in particular, and would be able to teach instrument playing or solo singing or choir subjects, as well as carry out artistic creative work and scientific research in the sphere of music. The aim of the programme is to raise the motivation for professional development and further education.

To achieve the aim of the programme the following objectives are set:

  • to structure the studies as a constituent part of practicable activity of a future musician and music teacher, which is in constant connection and unity with the cultural processes occurring in Latvia and in the world;
  • to introduce such content of studies that it would facilitate the students’ development as polymathic personalities, who, having proper understanding, responsibility and professionalism, would develop the cultural environment of Latvia and Latgale in particular;
  • to develop an integrated study process that contributes to the future specialists’ artistic, pedagogical and scientific activity;
  • to ensure the unity of the students’ theoretical knowledge and practical activity, as well as accumulation of experience of professional and artistic creative work;
  • to promote the development of the system of values, which is necessary for independent pedagogical, artistic and scientific work, basing on the humanity’s moral experience;
  • to develop the teaching methods and forms of work organization in compliance with the requirements for professional studies;
  • to acquire the principles of methods, analysis of pedagogical facts and assessment used in pedagogical and scientific research;
  • to impart knowledge of music history and theory, human culture and moral, to develop understanding of the basic values of humanism, their development in pedagogical process, to impart knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of education, psychology, general and music pedagogy;
  • to facilitate the development of musical ability through the acquisition of skills in playing different musical instruments;
  • to develop the students’ abilities to express themselves in music.

General skills in the sphere:

Particular professional skills of a Professional Education Teacher of Music:

  • the skill to evaluate the artistic level of the interpretation of a composition, to assess achievements and introduce corrections;
  • the skill to guide learners’ artistic creative and research work;
  • the skill to motivate learners to lifelong learning and informed choice of career, as well as to independent musical activity;
  • the ability to work independently and creatively;
  • the ability to perform music in various styles of interpretation;
  • the skills to collect and analyze the data necessary in the sphere of music, to draw conclusions containing reflection of social, scientific or ethical aspects of music;
  • the ability to use one’s knowledge and understanding so that it testifies to the professional approach to one’s work and competence, building up and proving arguments, dealing with problems in one’s sphere of activity;
  • the skill to work out methodological study materials;
  • the skill to encourage learners to perform and evaluate music of different styles independently;
  • the skill to determine learners’ individuality;
  • the skill to denote clear-cut aims and objectives, as well as the ways and methods leading to their achievement;
  • the skill to select and use information;
  • the skill to choose appropriate means of study and education;
  • the ability of self-analysis;
  • the skill to analyze and evaluate the compositions of different periods and styles;
  • the skill to independently learn compositions of different complexity and to perform them in public;
  • the skill to reveal the emotional content of a composition;
  • the ability to be efficient and to select the brightest artistic repertoire;
  • the ability to amass concert program repertoire for the independent performer’s activity;
  • the skill to draw up concert programs;
  • the ability to develop artistic taste;
  • the skill to predict and achieve the result of artistic performance;
  • the ability to explain the regularities of music development;
  • the ability to ensure the quality of fulfilment of the tasks planned;
  • the skill to create positive and creative atmosphere for work;

  • the ability to play at least one musical instrument;
  • the ability to develop learners’ skills of playing music collectively;
